چکیده

A hypergraph H = (V,E) is called (1, k)-sparse, for some integer k, if each subset X ⊆ V with |X| ≥ k spans at most |X| − k hyperedges. If we also have |E| = |V | − k then H is (1, k)-tight. Hypergraphs of this kind occur in several problems of combinatorial rigidity, where the goal is to analyse the generic rigidity properties of point sets equipped with geometric constraints involving subsets of points. Motivated by this connection we develop a new inductive construction of 4-regular (1, 3)-tight hypergraphs and use it to deduce a Lamantype combinatorial characterization of generically minimally rigid projective frameworks on the projective line. Hypergraphs with the same sparsity parameter show up in some key results of scene analysis, due to Whiteley, as well as in affine rigidity, introduced by Gortler et al. Thus our result implies a Henneberg-type inductive construction of generically minimally rigid affine frameworks in the plane. Based on the rank function of the corresponding count matroid on the edge set of H we also obtain purely combinatorial proofs for some results on generically affinely rigid hypergraphs.

Combinatorial and Algorithmic Volume Rigidity

We study the generic rigidity properties of systems of volume constraints. We formally define, in an algebraic geometrical setting, the volume rigidity problem and extract its underlying sparse hypergraph structure. Then we develop a combinatorial theory of cocircuit matroids which leads to a very general linear representation result for sparse hypergraphs. Applying this to the volume rigidity ...

An Incidence Geometry Approach to Dictionary Learning

We study Dictionary Learning (aka sparse coding). By geometrically interpreting an exact formulation of Dictionary Learning, we identify related problems and draw formal relationships among them. Dictionary Learning is viewed as the minimum generating set of a subspace arrangement. This formulation leads to a new family of dictionary learning algorithms. When the data are sufficiently general a...

Partitioning Hypergraphs in Scientific Computing Applications through Vertex Separators on Graphs

The modeling flexibility provided by hypergraphs has drawn a lot of interest from the combinatorial scientific community, leading to novel models and algorithms, their applications, and development of associated tools. Hypergraphs are now a standard tool in combinatorial scientific computing. The modeling flexibility of hypergraphs however, comes at a cost: algorithms on hypergraphs are inheren...

Natural realizations of sparsity matroids

A hypergraph G with n vertices and m hyperedges with d endpoints each is (k, l)-sparse if for all sub-hypergraphs G on n vertices and m edges, m ≤ kn − l. For integers k and l satisfying 0 ≤ l ≤ dk − 1, this is known to be a linearly representable matroidal family. Motivated by problems in rigidity theory, we give a new linear representation theorem for the (k, l)-sparse hypergraphs that is nat...
